oldsoul: A Confluence of Dream-Pop Mastery and Exploration

Music Reviews — Lonesome Highway

Long time followers of SIMGE likely know of my long-time affinity held for bands that can swirl some beautiful dream-pop guitars while working in darker, undulating sounds. Hailing from Shrewsbury, Massachusetts, new group oldsoul hit most of my personal sonic sweet spots, and hopefully yours too. Signed to Honest Face Records, the band is all set to captivate hearts with their debut EP, Loverboy, releasing next week.

Dive Into "Show Me Something New"

The track "Show Me Something New" by oldsoul is a dynamic exhibition of the band's capability to transition through varying intensities while anchoring at the song's emotive core. Front-woman Jess Hall's crystalline voice calls out, elevating to a passionate crescendo reminiscent of Hop Along’s Frances Quinlan. Guitarist and vocalist Tom Stevens complements Hall with a dance of strings that both grounds and soars through the sonic landscape.

Accompanying the premiere of "Show Me Something New" is its music video. Stevens details his inspiration, citing a transformative trip to the Rockies and an impromptu video that captures the vastness and awe of nature's splendor. This experience is juxtaposed against the banality of everyday routines, with locals scenes in Lowell providing a stark contrast to the majestic Rockies, crafting a narrative of longing for adventure and the profound against the canvas of daily life.
